Large covered hopper cars are fully enclosed cars with a loading capacity above 4,000 cubic feet and are designed to handle bulk commodities. These cars can be loaded through the top or sides and unloaded through bottom openings. Large covered hoppers are available in gross rail loads of 220,000 to 263,000 lbs. Cars can be lined or unlined depending on specific commodities.
